i have a garmin nuvi 250w. When u have it plugged into the usb (back of the unit) to the computer usb serial port, is it charging the unit?

I assume that the 250w works the same as my 660, and the answer is yes. On my 660, it is slower that charging with wall power, but it does charge. (the 660 has 2 different charging ports on it.) On my 660 it takes about 1 hour to get 1 bar on the battery indicator.

There are many other features that are available on today’s portable GPS receivers, though knowing what you want before making a purchase will help you decide on which ones are most important to you, and which ones are just added bonuses. Below is a list of things that our product specialists recommend our customers to look for before making a purchasing decision when shopping for portable GPS receivers.

Screen Size: It is important to consider the screen size of a portable GPS receiver because if your not able to see the roads you need to take, there’s no point of having GPS. Make sure to get a receiver with a screen that will be large enough for you to be able to see street names with ease. Keep in mind though; there is always the zoom feature which gives you close ups of the map being displayed.

Touch Screen Controls: You should consider a receiver with touch screen controls, which makes it easier for you to input your information, and saves space because there is no need for extra buttons elsewhere.

Voice Prompts: If you plan on using the GPS receiver mainly while driving, it would be best to get one that features turn-by-turn voice prompts so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.

Battery: If you plan on using the GPS system that is not connected to something for power, consider the battery life of the receiver. If the battery doesn’t last you long enough, you may just end up lost in the middle of nowhere.

Re-Routing Capabilities: Re-routing capabilities on a GPS receiver is a feature that re-calculates another route for you when you miss a turn. Getting a receiver with re-routing capabilities is important because if you miss a turn and the GPS doesn’t automatically re-route, then you will have to go back follow the receivers exact route which can be very inefficient. Most portable GPS receivers designed for use in a car have re-routing capabilities, though some may not so its always good to double check.

Points of Interest: Having a GPS receiver with a high amount of POI (Points of Interest) can be very helpful to you in finding locations that you don’t know the exact address to. The points of interest usually include things like gas stations, banks, stores, restaurants, ATM machines, etc.

What is WAAS and why is it important to GPS receivers?

This question came to me as I was searching for a portable navigation GPS for my car. I wondered as I researched products why some offered WAAS while others did not. So I found myself wondering what the acronym meant and how having or not having it would affect the product’s performance.

WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System.

Basicaly, atmospheric conditions will reduce the accuracy of the GPS satellite signal. At any given time the best resolution from a standard GPS will be a position to within 30 ft. This is great for the average user, but a big disaster for critical users like aircraft.

Enter WAAS. To compensate for the 30ft grey area, ground stations are set up at hyper-surveyed locations. they beam their known position to different satellites, these rebroadcast the positions to WAAS enabled recievers, and the difference is mostly eliminated, producing accuracy to within 4ft.

For WAAS to work, you need to be in view of both the GPS and WAAS sattelites. There are currently only 2 WAAS satellites over the continential US, so for a car or handheld unit, WAAS accuracy is only available when you have a completely unobstucted view of the sky. This is likely to improve in the future.

Why dose my Garmin StreetPiolt C330 GPS only work when I have it plugged in to my car, when I take it out of my car it will not turn on, like the batteries are dead but is it not so post to charge them when I have it plugged in. O.K. so it may have fell of the windscreen on to the set but that should not hurt it, right. Has anyone els had this problem and what can I do? Thanks

The on/off button of my GPS tends to push against anything around when I put it away and stays ON until I need it again. So the battery gets totally discharged and it won’t work until I plug it in. So maybe that what is happening to yours. Also, if the battery is deffective, it won’t charge up. Call you manufacturer and get a replacement battery.

Best Handheld GPS unit for use at Glacier National Park? (under $200)?

I will be going to Glacier National Park and I want a GPS unit to aid my travel. I am currently looking at the Garmin GPS 60. From what I have read, it is non-mapping. I’m not really sure what that means… The reviews I have read are great.

1) mapping GPS receivers display location information on road maps, marking your position in relation to highways, lakes, landmarks and cities while Non-mapping GPS receivers (or mapping GPS units with the map turned off) display your movements by laying down tracklogs and waypoints (position markers), then “connecting the dots” to show your path, allowing you to retrace your route, but there’s no road-map underlay. Any of the Garmin units can be upgraded to be a mapping unit through software like Garmin City Navigator.

2) My family has used Garmin 60cx’s for quite a while now and have never been unsatisfied with them. However thats a bit out of your budget. I would recommend a GPSr in Garmin’s eTrex series (eTrex, eTrex Camo, Legend, Vista, etc.). They are small and excellent beginning units. Furthermore, Garmin’s customer support leaves nothing to be desired. Stupid mistakes made by the user (such as leaving your GPS on the roof of your car) will typically be corrected by Garmin for approximately half of the retail price of the unit (quite often they even go so far as to send you a refurbished unit).

Its a bit off-topic, but if you’re looking at GPS units, you might also want to check out the “sport” Geocaching (www.geocaching.com). Even if it doesn’t agree with you, there is an excellent community there that would be happy to help you with any problems you might have with your unit.

I am an actual buyer from Australia - I buy these and sell them online.

They are a simply amazing product for the price. I am in fact angry because they are better than my $300 Mio GPS system, which I bought on sale.
They are easy to use, have amazing features such as ebook, able to play movies, FM transmitter so the directions sound over the radio; they are slim and good looking. I have only had one problem with my order’s and that was one order not coming with power adapter converters for Australian power sockets.

They really are a good buy and I recommend them to any one!

Best Buy Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin nuvi 255 or 265T for the same price. Which to buy?

Both are selling for $179. Very limited reviews on the 265 except sound quality is not good for bluetooth. It won’t matter because my Samsung SCH U 740 is not compatible with nuvi 265T.

Without question get the 265T. I believe that Bluetooth is not the only big difference. With the 265T, you also get a FM traffic receiver built-in, which is a nice service where available (coverage is still spotty but getting better).

Usually the 265T sells for $50 more than the 255. If they are at the same price, go with the 265T. Even if you don’t use them now, Bluetooth and traffic are good things to have, and you may one day use them.

Check on the traffic thing though. The 265T is supposed to have it (”T” stands for traffic in the Garmin model number code), but they don’t include many descriptions.
