‘My friend bought this GPS because there are always problems in cities, and keep losing more and more, so that makes sense to invest in a GPS, which helps him navigate from one place to another easier. I am not attached to any brand, when I looked, but have always been impressed by the opinions and testimony of Garmin’s friends who said they had never had a problem, and to love him. I looked at the 205 than the cheap, but the price and the rest of the features of Garmin is unbeatable. First of all, the life-time traffic high, because it helps cut down the time, stuck a long way, and shows him the shortest way to point B to point, before he even knows the difference. Second, the screen is large and the user interface is incredibly easy to use. It’s a little pricey, but if you’re going to invest in a GPS unit, you might as well make sure you do. I’m not sure that the GPS is almost as valuable without the traffic and not have to pay a subscription fee just sent over the top.

So basically I got this and it really is the greatest thing in the world, if you drive a lot. Not only this one comes with the FM traffic receiver (much better if you live in a big city, check out the website I live in NY), which is worth $[...] itself, this unit is great on its own. Nice big screen, good sound, not to mention lifetime traffic?? And that’s also a lot of POI. Plus, if the device does not have the desired POI, then go to Google Maps, connect the device to your PC via a USB cable and sends the location of the Nuvi.
Eco-routing helps you save gas (to create a profile, and it works better) and not worry about sitting in traffic is the traffic updates. There are a few ads, but it’s worth the time, do not have to sit in traffic. Granted I live in New York, and we have good coverage, but check the website of the area.
Smooth scrolling while driving, and a quick update. You can get a free download of the latest maps, which will not be for a while, but it is worth a free update, which is regularly associated with $[...] (or you can pay for and get life $[...] map update). Do yourself a favor and take a long drag, so you do not need the ring on the windscreen of the thieves, that (a big problem here). So you can just put it under the seat.
This is a good price. Check around (make sure to add at least $[...] traffic receiver) and you will see there is no way you can pass this up if the market for a GPS system.
In addition, Garmin does not list this model on your site, which worried me, is the first, but there were no problems with the updates [...] seems to think they have any simply that the U.S. had reflashed Garmin maps. I agree, but if it is indeed a problem, maybe you should buy special traffic and get the 255w. See for yourself, but it is much cheaper and works like a charm. I propose the site to compare models. Very informative and helped a lot with my purchase.

I just got a tomtom go 720 and I’m trying to connect it to my phone so I can use the hands free calling thing. i cant get it to connect my phone, which duz have bluetooth and bluetooth is turned on, can’t find my gps and the other way around. theres a symbol on the right hand side of the screen that shows up on the screen right before you press done. what duz this mean

Before we can pair the GO 720 with a cell phone via Bluetooth, we’ll need to turn on Bluetooth. From the preferences menu, tap “Bluetooth preferences”. By default Bluetooth is set to “Disable” on the GO 720. First we’ll need to enable Bluetooth and tap Done to save the changes.
Tapping on Advanced menu brings up the Bluetooth preferences menu, shown above. This screen allows you to enable or disable the hands-free calling and/or wireless data Bluetooth functionality.
If you want to make use of TomTom’s PLUS services, and use the GO 720 as a hands-free speakerphone, you’ll want to make sure both options are checked (they are by default).
Now that we’ve turned on Bluetooth, we’ll need to pair the GO 720 with a Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Tap on the “Mobile Phone” icon from the Main Menu to begin the pairing process.Tap “YES” to continue.
Tap “YES” to have the GO 720 start searching for Bluetooth enabled phones within range. Within a few seconds of searching, the GO 720 finds your Bluetooth-enabled phone. I’ll tap “YES” to tell the GPS to link to your phone.Your phone should prompt you to enter the password to connect to the TomTom.Enter 0-0-0-0.
A message should appear saying, the pairing process was a success, and you will now have access to hands-free calling and TomTom’s PLUS services. The GO 720 displays another message saying you need to configure the data service before making use of TomTom’s PLUS services. Tap on “YES” and continue.
Next the GO 720 asks you to tell it what model cell phone you’re trying to connect via Bluetooth.
Tell the GO 720 what country you’ll be operating in.
Next you need to tell the TomTom which network you’re cell phone is on. T-Mobile, CellularOne, AT&T, and Cingular are supported.
Now that we’ve activated Bluetooth on the GO 720, and paired it to the cell phone, we’re ready to make use of the mobile phone integration features. From the Main Menu, tap on “Mobile phone”.
The GO 720 can copy over the address book from your cell phone. This screen is only displayed the first time you enter the Phone menu, after which you can re-copy the address any time by tapping on “Get numbers from phone.
In addition to the usual calling options, the TomTom GO 720 can send/receive SMS text message (though not emails) via the Bluetooth-connected cell phone.
The “Manage phones” icon is used to pair additional phones to the GO 720. The GPS can be paired to a maximum of 5 mobile phones.

The picture resolution is of such high quality that the display is very sharp. Even maps can be viewed clearly with this GPS device. It possesses the quality of a touch screen and the option buttons are large enough for the fingers to operate without confusion and errors.
While the keyboard facility of this device is slightly congested, you have the option to choose between a QWERTY keypad and a keypad with ABC format. I suggest that you go through the user manual which will give you more insight into the newer features which you are not familiar with. I’m particuarly concerened about the map resolution, in the UK it comes loaded with the Atlantic base map, is this good enough for navigating around European roads, not just motorways but smaller lanes and streets?
If its no good, what are your recommendations for alternatives, I mainly need something to find my way around when driving through europe. But also like the fact that the Garmin eTrex can be used for hill walking, sailing etc. Units like the Tom Tom one are fine for driving, but no good for the other applications.
A friend of a friend had one and said it was a bit rubbish. They got a Tom Tom instead though. Sorry, I don’t know any other alternatives.

The Basics of GPS: It’s More Than Just An Electronic Device
Whenever we hear the term “GPS”, what would instantly come to our minds is a digital device with maps and other features that tells us our exact location on this planet. But do you know that such a device is just one part of GPS? The device is called a GPS receiver, and while it is indeed an important GPS device, it is just a part of a very large and complex system that allows us to measure our exact location on earth.
The three-lettered term “GPS” stands for Global Positioning System. It is a satellite based navigation system that has the ability to measure an object’s precise location on earth. The system was developed by the United States’ Department of Defense (DOD) and was officially called in the US military as the NAVSTAR GPR (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System). It was intended to be used for military operations only but has been opened for civilian use since the 1980s.
The Global Positioning System is a very huge and complex system that can be divided into three segments: space, control, and user. The “space” segment of the GPS refers to its network of satellites that transmit the signals used for location identification. The “control” segment, on the other hand, refers to the various stations on earth that maintain and control the system. The “user” segment refers to the GPS receivers—the actual unit that we often mistake as the system.
SPACE
The “space” segment of the GPS is a constellation of 27 satellites that orbits the earth at some 12,000 miles above its surface. 24 of these satellites are in operation while the other 3 are on “standby” mode and will be used in case one fails. Each of the satellites orbits the earth twice in less than 24 hours, traveling at a speed of approximately 7,000 miles per hour.
Each of the satellite used in the GPS constellation weighs about 3,000 to 4,000 pounds. All of these satellites are solar-powered, although all have backup batteries onboard to be used in the absence of solar power (i.e., solar eclipse). Small rocket boosters are also used to keep the satellites flying on the correct path.
The signals being transmitted by the GPS satellites are low powered radio signals. These signals contain three different bits of information—a pseudorandom code, ephemeris data, and almanac data—that are deciphered by the GPS receiver to obtain a precise measure of its location. The pseudorandom code tells the receiver which satellite is transmitting the signal while the ephemeris data provides information about the satellite’s position. The almanac data, on the other hand, contains information like the status of the satellite, current date and time.
CONTROL
The “control” segment of the GPS refers to the various ground stations run by the US Department of Defense that controls various aspects of the system. In particular, these stations monitors the flight of the GPS satellites, synchronizes the satellite’s onboard atomic clocks, and uploads the data to be transmitted by the satellites.
USER
The “user” segment of the GPS refers to the GPS receivers, whether they are used for military or civilian purposes. The GPS receiver is basically an electronic device that picks up the signal transmitted by the satellites and uses the information on those signals to figure out its precise location. Now that sounds simple! In reality, however, this function is a lot more complex.
The GPS receiver actually needs two things for it to figure out its location. First, it needs information about the location of at least three GPS satellites. Then, it would need to measure the distance between it and each of the three GPS satellites. The first information can be deciphered from the signal transmitted by the satellites while the second can be obtained by measuring the speed at which the signal was received.

You see, the GPS is not just the GPS receiver alone. It is a very big system, and a very complex one at that. But because every other part of the system is well maintained by the Department of Defense, we will never have to worry about those parts. All we have to do is to secure a GPS receiver and in an instant, we’ll receive information about our current location and other things that the receiver may want us to know.
