The Australian Formula 1 GP Makes Racing Better When it Rains
Yes, things are much better this time around in Melbourne, Australia. The Quantas Australia Formula 1 Grand Prix 2010 saw Jenson Button of McLaren Mercedes taking the chequered flag, Robert Kubica of Renault taking second and Ferrari’s Phillipe Massa coming in third. But the good thing was it rained and there was racing instead of a procession of cars. This fact played a real part in Button’s victory as he gambled on an early tire change from intermediates to full race slicks very early on.
It wasn’t like Bore-rain, where I almost fell asleep while watching the telly. It had the racers maintain their track position lap after lap. It had overtaking this time unlike Bahrain, the rain in the early part of the race. As it was a wet start, entertainment happened from the start - car crashes and all.
Pole Sitter Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing had a decent start, as did Felipe Massa from fifth splitting the Red Bulls (who started in pole and in second) by Massa. Fernando Alonso who started in position 3(P3) dropped back. Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button got into a predicament as Alonso closed the door at the corner. Michael Schumacher got nudged and his front wing damaged (for which he had to pit). Button lost ground as he took avoiding action and cars passed by. Alguersuari Toro Rosso (Buemi) headed for the gravel as the Sauber driven by Kamui Kobayashi lost a front wing on the way to Turn 3 which pitched him right into the barriers, causing his car bouncing off across the track and taking both Nico Hulkenberg and Sebastien Buemi out. Three car casualties and not even one lap completed the Race Director Charlie Whiting called for the safety car.
You see, rain makes entertaining racing. It was Jenson Button’s decision for a very early pitstop (lap 6) that allowed him to win. After deciding that the intermediate tires were not doing well for him, he came in for slicks and it nearly cost him as upon leaving the pits, he lost control and went straight on turn 3. Two laps later almost all of the front runners came in for slicks with the exception of the Red Bulls which seemed okay on intermediates.
Sebastian Vettel’s seems to have gotten into an unlucky streak of starting on pole and then the car letting him down. In Bahrain, engine trouble was the cause and this time, the brakes had locked up and he ended in the gravel. The reliability of the Red Bull in question.
Lewis Hamilton of McLaren also had bad luck and bad team decision. McLaren, had decided to call for a tire change without consulting the driver and according to Hamilton, this cost him a podium finish. Maybe it was down to inexperience on Hamilton’s side and a bad mistake by the team. As some said that as driver he would have a choice to say ‘no’ to his race engineer. Even an experienced team like McLaren can make bad decisions. On the point of bad luck, Hamilton tangled with Mark Webber not once, but twice, the second time costing him to end his race at P6 instead of P5 and Webber a front wing and getting P9 with a possibility of a penalty at the next race in Sepang. Nico Rosberg of Mercedes Petronas capitalizing and getting P5 instead.
It was fun. Even at the tail end of the race Michael Schumacher on the last 10 laps had overtaken two cars clinching P10 for the last point scoring position. Rain equals unpredictability in Formula 1 and this is a good thing. Maybe we don’t need the Gatling Guns, batterin rams and missiles after all. Just add water to the race track instead. Sepang would be equally fun if it rains. I just hope it does not rain till all racing was stopped like last year.

The first thing to decide is how you plan on using a GPS and the second is how much you plan on spending on a GPS. Do you plan on using it in your car, for hiking and backpacking, or for hunting and/or fishing? Current GPS receivers are limited as to what they can do and are optimized a specific purpose. There are GPS specifically for flying, others for hunting and/or fishing, and others for Car Navigation. A few are just an electronic map that shows your position on the map screen. Others have no maps at all and can be just fine if you just want to know your longitude/latitude.
If you plan on using your GPS in an automobile, there are several choices: a basic or mapping handheld receiver; a dedicated automotive receiver; a GPS with a PDA; or a Laptop GPS.
Although handheld units can be used in a car there are several disadvantages-the screen can be hard to see due to its small size and some units will need to be placed forward on the dashboard where they can get a better signal. With a basic (non-mapping) unit you can tell where you are as long as you have a paper map with you to interpret that data.
A mapping unit is the more useful choice considering with driving usually involves roads. A dedicated automotive receiver is larger than a handheld in order to accommodate a screen large enough to be seen while driving. They are powered by the car’s electrical system and because of this; they can only be used in a vehicle. Automotive units usually have voice instructions to allow you to navigate without taking your eyes off the road. Prices start at about $500 US.
A GPS with a PDA needs clear access to the sky for satellite reception. Some receivers have the antenna built in or have the capability for an external antenna. An antenna on the seat of your car may or may not work. The console is the next best place - reception may be questionable. An air vent mount is better and a windshield mount or the antenna placed all the way forward on the dashboard is better yet. The most reliable place is for an external antenna to be attached to the roof of your car.
A laptop GPS requires a CF with an external antenna, a Bluetooth GPS receiver, a mouse-type GPS receiver, or be connected via a cable to a handheld GPS unit so the receiver can be placed in a position for good reception. Of course a laptop is large, but the main advantage is a very large screen for maps. If you have a need for a laptop in your car, this may be the best choice and a mouse-type receiver is inexpensive.
If you plan on using your GPS for hiking or backpacking there are three choices, a basic handheld receiver, a mapping handheld receiver and GPS with a PDA. It is also recommended that in addition to your GPS, you should take a paper map, and magnetic compass, and extra batteries. Weight and size need to be considered when deciding which GPS to choose. A basic receiver does not have mapping abilities, however it will display your location in a format that you choose, and most likely latitude/longitude. Providing your paper maps have your chosen position format marked on them, your GPS will allow you to find your location on the map. If your maps don’t have the position format grids marked already, this is something you’ll want to do yourself. These are going to be the least expensive choices for GPS, often less than $100 US and are as accurate as more expensive units; they just don’t have as many features. The main feature they lack is mapping capability.
For hunting or fishing many handheld models include best hunting and fishing times for a given location and date. Mapping handheld receivers are often larger, heavier, and/or have shorter battery lives than basic units. Shorter battery life means carrying more extra batteries adding bulk and weight. With a mapping handheld unit you will have the benefit of having the maps displayed on your GPS. These also include other benefits such as a barometric altimeter, an electronic compass, games, and a calendar and you can plan your route ahead of time on your PC and upload it to your GPS. These units display pre-loaded maps and map detail is reflected by the size and resolution of the screen. This means that mapping units are generally larger than basic units. The downside of a GPS with a PDA is that it will drain your battery quicker and it also of the top of your PDA. Mapping units are more expensive than basic units; prices start at about $150 US unless you get one with Bluetooth capabilities which are more expensive. For fishing a chart plotter/GPS or a GPS sounder are also available. The chart plotter/GPS and GPS sounders usually have a lot of features and start at about $400 US.

Garmin Gps/sonar combo internal or external antenna, dual or single frequency?
I want to buy a new GPS/SONAR for my new boat. Anyone have one with an internal antenna? I would like to know if you ever lose signal.
Whats the difference between the single and double frequency? This is the model Im looking at buying, Eagle SeaCharter 642C DF iGPS but Im interested in the new lowrance hds models also. Any info would be appreciated.
Internal will be fine if the unit is mounted outside the cabin (I’m not a boater so I don’t know if that is the proper term). If its mounted “indoors” then you should go with the external antenna.
Single vs dual frequency in GPS terms means whether or not you can track L1 only (i.e. single freq) or L1 and L2 (i.e. dual freq). Generally, dual frequency receivers in GPS have a specific [high-end] use (engineering or military). Its not likely to do the consumer any good. However, looking at the spec sheet for this model (http://www.eaglenav.com/en/Products/Fishfinder-Chartplotters/SeaCharter-642C-DF-iGPS/), I believe the dual freq refers to the sonar, not GPS. (I have no knowledge of sonars, but I suspect this means the sonar operates at 2 frequencies for better precision)

I have a Garmin C330 GPS unit that I want to update to the 2009 mapset, but, I want to back up the 2008 set in case of any problems.
I would think that you should just be able to find it under my computer but I can’t, anyone know how to do this?
You actually can’t back them up. Garmin is pretty paranoid about people hacking the maps and selling them/using them on extra units. If you are using a Map Update DVD then the 2008 maps will automatically be backed up.
I just bought the Map update for my Nuvi 660 from EdgeGPS.com for $59.00 They were great.

As stated before, check the seller’s ratings first.
Oh, yes, I recently bought (from a store, not Ebay) a Garmin Nuvi 350. It’s more compact, has a MP3 player, photo viewer, language translator, currency & measurement converter, and e-book option.
