What’s the best entry level Portable GPS System for a car?

I’m looking at different GPS systems for my car. I would ideally like on with an internal battery as well as an additoinal car charger or at least the ability to buy this after. I also would prefer one that has a good mount of some sort.

I personally use Garmin nRoute on my laptop as did my brother, who is an Air Force Navigator. But he switched over to the Garmin Street Pilot and absolutely loves it. We’re both Garmin fans and would recommend it over any other brand.

So, I’m sorry I can’t offer specific advice, but I just wanted to convey my suggestion of staying in the Garmin family.

Can you change the navigation software on a GPS device?

i just bought a carhandheld gps navigation unit. The software on it is horrible. i was wondering is there anyway of changing the software on the unit? Are there any third party navigation software for GPS devices? It has 1Gb of storage space on the unit.

For those of you who know something about GPS systems, which is better or which ones have you used and had positive/negative experiences with? Also what does the “w” at the end stand for? There is a $50 difference in price. I was told by the sales associate that the 255w is a newer model. But I have read around that the sound quality isn’t as great as the older model. The one I was going to buy is 3.5” so if anyone has any suggestions please help. Thanks.

The 255 that i own is great, no complaints about it. The major difference between the two is the updated map. If you’re someone who travels a lot you might want to invest in the newer version. You can go onto the Garmin website and click on the products you want to compare and they show you a very detailed chart with the products side by side so you can actually take a look at where they differ. The W is for wide screen. Usually more money, but since you’re looking for a 3.5, you can go without the W. The sound quality of my 255 isn’t that bad, you get to choose the voice you want; although the voice doesn’t sound as human as the older versions, it’s not that bad. It’s a trade-off. You get better features, but you lack the human sound (it’s a bit more robotic)
