The Tom Tom Gps System -May Save Your Life

Being lost in a life-size city without a tom tom GPS system can be a very frightening occurrence. People have actually been killed by ending up in the wrong neighborhood after making a wrong turn. It happened to one of my friends so I know from a first-hand experience how tragic this can be. The simple truth is, with the cost of a tom tom GPS system being so affordable, everybody who travels much at all, should have one in their vehicle. Saving a life is enormous but just saving time, anxiety, and gas will be worth the investment. It is a funny thing how men have been the brunt of many jokes because they hate to stop and ask directions. I can relate to this statement because I myself hate very much to stop and ask directions.

A great safety feature of the tom tom go 720 model is the blue tooth technology that allows a cellular phone to be programmed through the system and create a hands-free cell phone conversation. It is not a good idea to talk on the phone and drive, even when doing so hands-free, because a person is distracted from driving. It is at least a better option to have two hands on the wheel at all times rather than just one.

Another feature of a tom tom GPS system is the capability to program the car stereo through the navigation system so the audible directions are transmitted through the stereo. This is a neat feature because a person can listen to the driving instructions and not have to depend solely on looking at the map on the screen.

The abbreviation “GPS” stands for global positioning system and it was developed by the Department of Defense in 1973 for the purpose of assisting soldiers, planes, military vehicles, and ships to determine their location anywhere in the world. The explosion of technology has allowed items like this to be manufactured at very low cost which has created a huge demand in the private sector. The GPS hand held models have become a very popular for the outdoorsman. Outdoor sports like hunting, hiking, boating and deep sea fishing have come to depend on these systems and they provide such a sense of security to know that you can always have your location pin-pointed. Having been lost and spending the night in the woods is one reason I would by no means go hunting without a hand-held gps.

For those who are very technical minded, a Google search with the question “what is GPS” will display the Wikipedia explanation in great detail. This information is more than likely a little sophisticated for the average person and in most cases the average person does not care so much as to how the system works, but that it just does.

I am still puzzled as to how the voice activation on the tom tom GPS system knows when I make the wrong turn and how she can get me back on track! Most women would agree that it takes a good woman to keep a man straight.

Finding The Way With GPS Navigation

For any of us who have been lost while driving, the road map has been our guiding light, identifying roadways and landmarks to help us find our way. But gone are the days of tri-folded paper maps that require the use of illumination and attention taken from the road. The modern Global Positioning System - or GPS - has transformed the process by which we find our way. But, contrary to popular belief, GPS navigation is not a new invention designed for strictly consumer use.

The Global Positioning System marked its beginnings in the 1970s but seeds of its existence were sown prior to that. We first saw the possibilities of satellite navigation with the launching of Sputnik in 1957. Russian scientists who were monitoring the progress of Sputnik found that they could track its movement based on radio waves; this set the foundation for GPS. The U.S. Navy used an elementary form of GPS in the 1960s when they used six satellites to help their submarines pinpoint their location. But GPS as we know it was designed and implemented by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1978 when they launched the first operational satellite.

Today, 24 satellites circle the earth and provide an enormous amount of information in terms of plotting location. A derivative of this technology in modern times has been GPS navigation - a system that allows drivers to map their routes. GPS navigation comes in a portable unit that can be removed and transferred from vehicle to vehicle when needed. But because of the growing popularity associated with this system, GPS navigation units are now mounted as standard equipment in newer cars. Of course, GPS navigation is also essential to water navigation as used by boats and ships.

But GPS navigation is not solely for the use of vehicles. Outdoor enthusiasts - with an eye towards safety - will often carry a hand-held GPS navigation device; the modern equivalent of a compass.

GPS navigation has allowed us to explore new terrain as we venture forth with confidence, knowing that, no matter what, we will find our way.

Can the amount of Satellites support the increase use of GPS devices?

GPS is becoming a very common use throughout the world now days. I know that the US government has 31 operational satellites at this time, but with the increasing use of GPS in cars and as a feature being added to most new phones; is it possible that the system will begin to run slower? Could the amount of people requiring locational services actually exceed the satellite’s capabilities?
I also heard that many US satellites are 4 years past their designed life-time yet they’re still in orbit due to the cost associated with launching new satellites. Could these decaying satellites also pose a threat to the speed of the network if they become too old to operate?

Does your radio "run slower" when more people are listening? Does your TV "run slower" when more people are tuned in and watching?

Of course not.

GPS satellites do nothing but transmit some very exacting signals which all these things on the earth receive. It makes zero difference if there is one receiver or a billion. A GPS receiver does not transmit one bit of information to the satellites, thus your entire question is wrong.

In the way you are using the term, no. The only possibility from loss of a couple satellites is that for brief periods of time in various places around the earth any particular receiver might be able to see fewer satellites than normal, thus increasing the error it its positional calculations.
