Garmin Handheld Gps Units Lead The Way To Finding Treasure

Garmin Handheld GPS ImageGarmin has emerged as one of the leading GPS manufacturers in the industry today. Durable, versatile, and dependable, these must haves have earned their place in the land (or water) of the GPS leaders. GPS devices today are made for boats, cars, ships, airplanes, the palm of your hand, and even cell phones now have some GPS capabilities. With handheld units, you can find roads, places of interest, obstructions, restaurants, hospitals, and you can even find yourself! How many products promise you that?

GPS units these days are not just for keeping people from getting lost or finding people if they are lost. People have long been playing games with these GPS units. They are a sort of find the hidden treasure game, called geocaching. Participants in these games use GPS to hide and find containers full of treasures, and they hide them and find them all over the world. The caches, which are the hidden containers, are usually somewhat small, waterproof, and contain a journal or note on paper with some sort of trinket, usually of little value. Geocaching has become a worldwide loved pastime, with the number of registered caches that are hidden approaching the 1,000,000 mark. These canisters are hidden on all seven continents (yes, even on Antarctica), and can be found in more than 100 different countries.

So how can GPS devices help find these treasures? The clues to finding them lie in location coordinates. The journal paper or note that is inside the cache contains the coordinates of that containers location. These coordinates are entered into an official geocaching website by the hider. The seeker sees that a cache is hidden at specific coordinates online, takes note, grabs his handheld GPS device, puts in the coordinates, and follows the trail by way of his GPS that will lead him right to the treasure.
Many people travel across the world to find these hidden caches in such places as the pyramids in Egypt, the Amazon Rain Forest, or even an igloo in Antarctica. Garmin is one of the most popular makers of handheld units. Their units are portable, fit comfortably in your hand, and are often sold as kits and adventure packs, complete with accessories. Garmin also makes dog tracking systems and units specifically to find you, and are appropriately named Ifinders.

Geocaching is a fun, worldwide treasure hunting game that is based on GPS technology, and participants claim they easily get hooked on the pastime. Just make sure that before you are off and running to find your next little hidden container you have your Garmin handheld GPS unit with you the treasure is sure to be yours.

Best Purchase Ever - Garmin Gps System!

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, being one of the smartest devices ever made by a human. The mechanism by which a GPS system functions is complicated but the basic principle is the following: if you do not know where you are, the GPS will tell you. If you do not know your destination, the device will guide you to it. It’s that simple and it really works.

Are you interested in purchasing a highly efficient GPS system? Do you lack the time to ramble from store to store? Do not despair. There is a solution and that is searching over the Internet. You have numerous virtual stores that provide Garmin GPS systems at truly affordable prices. Just be patient and search for the best there is.

Garmin GPS SystemsWhat is the greatest innovation when it comes to a GPS system? Well, it might interest you to find out that Garmin GPS is able to recognize your voice. That’s right. Speech recognition is probably one of the greatest things that a GPS system could have. You do not have to waste time entering the address on the device; you just have to attach a special remote to the steering wheel. This is mandatory in order for the speech recognition to function. Once you have installed the remote, you can start giving voice commands to the Garmin GPS.

The speech recognition feature has been especially welcomed by new drivers, as they can finally concentrate on the road. A GPS system can also come equipped with Bluetooth, allowing one to connect it to the cell phone. There are many advantages when it comes to purchasing a Garmin GPS, one of the best navigational systems out there. The latest models on the market provide the user with direct access to MSN services. This means that one is able to find out about a lot of important things right from the GPS system.

Do you want to find out if there are any changes in the price of gas? Are you interested in current weather conditions when you’re driving to the mountain? Your GPS system can bring all this information to you and without any delays. The highly efficient Garmin GPS is perfect if you are interested in all the things mentioned above. Plus, you will be informed about any traffic jams, detours or other problems. It can even tell you when a certain movie is playing at the cinema, what stocks are up and present you with a detailed map of all festivals. What more could you wish from a GPS system?

If you have ever used a GPS system before, then you will certainly notice the difference that the Garmin GPS brings into picture. We are talking about the possibility plan a trip using various Internet resources (including Windows Live Local) and transferring all the information regarding your destination (or route) to the GPS. As for MSN direct services, prepare yourself to discover a wide range of information presented for various cities. This GPS system is so much more than functional, it represents a dream come true.

And how about the display? What do you say about an impressive 4.3 inch display that adjusts accordingly to day or night time? Best of all, the display has an integrated touch screen that increases the functionality of the GPS system to an even higher level. You can either choose to enter the destination on the touch screen or speak it out loud. It’s your choice and it’s great to have a Garmin GPS as your travel buddy, isn’t it?

How to Choose a GPS
 by: Billy Bert

You’ve heard that new sport, geocaching, is fun. Or, you’re tired of getting lost on your travels. Welcome to the 21st century. Global Postioning System (GPS) has been around long enough that prices are reasonable and the technology is user-friendly. With myriad brands and models, how to choose?

garmin nuvi 255 w gpsIf you want a GPS for both hiking and driving use, then a handheld unit would be the way to go. Some handhelds even have accessories to allow them to be installed in an automobile. But don’t rule out a PDA. More on that in a moment. For driving only, there are GPS receivers made just for vehicle use.

Handheld GPS receivers are either mapping or non–mapping. A basic, non–mapping unit can often cost less than $100 US and usually has/displays the following:

* Location
* Compass heading
* Elevation above sea level
* Accurate time
* Satellite location and signal strength
* The ability to calculate distance traveled
* The ability to record your path as a set of waypoints
* The ability to navigate routes
* The ability to retrace your steps

Handheld mapping receivers do all the above plus have the ability to display maps. The maps are either pre–loaded or uploaded from your PC. Prices are reasonable for mapping units, starting at around $150 US.

Paper maps are strongly recommended whether you’re using a mapping receiver or not. Paper maps do not require batteries and probably won’t go defective. Also, a paper map gives you a "big picture" view of your situation — something lacking on the small screen of a GPS.

I mentioned earlier your considering a PDA with GPS capability. A PDA is bulkier and the battery life is usually shorter, but if you’re using a PDA anyway, then there are several ways to turn a PDA into a GPS. Some PDAs accept a GPS "sleeve." That is a device that the PDA nestles into. Another choice is one of Garmin’s PDAs. Garmin is probably the most popular GPS maker and they have one PDA/GPS that is Palm–based and one that is Pocket PC–based.

Prices for automotive GPS start at around $250 US. These provide turn–by–turn guidance. Spend a little more than that and you get voice guidance. These are larger than handhelds in order to accommodate a screen large enough to be seen while driving. They are powered by the car’s electrical system and because of this, they can only be used in a vehicle.

garmin 205w gpsMany automobile manufacturers now offer built-in GPS receivers as an option. Because they are built-in, the big advantages are security and aesthetics. They are quite a bit more expensive than add-on units and often have fewer options. I’ve also heard some stories of people having a hard time getting map updates.

A PDA/GPS is a good alternative for automotive use. Its screen is about the size of an automotive unit, so seeing the display is not a problem. They can also be powered by the car, eliminating battery worries. The Garmin PDAs mentioned above both come with the hardware and software for automotive use.

If you’re hiking, a basic handheld unit (without maps) will be fine since you’ll always have paper maps with you anyway (you will, won’t you?). An advantage to a handheld mapping unit is that they usually have more advanced features than the basic units. For driving, you have the choice of a handheld, in–car dedicated, or PDA. The handheld does have limited usefulness in a car, as it does not provide turn–by–turn guidance.

Garmin GPS Buyers Guide

Garmin GPS Sale!

Yes there are six things you need to know before you buy a GPS for your car or truck. What do most people use a car GPS for? The most popular use is to get turn-by-turn directions while driving from point A to point B. Some popular car navigational units are the Magellan Roadmates, the Tomtom, the Garmin Nuvi units, and the new Navigon gps units.

gps navigation

1 - Screen Size and sound are important. Especially while driving. The screen should be readable and bright, Also Make sure the buttons are big enough for your fingers, so that you aren’t pressing multiple buttons at the same time. Vehicles are noisier than you may think. Driving noise can make it difficult to hear weak audio. Be sure to check out the sound quality to make sure you can understand what is being said. It should be clear and loud so that you can hear it in your vehicle.

2 - Downloadable Maps and memory. Most gps units come with maps built in. A lot of them can download maps as well. It is a good idea to puchase one that has the ability to download maps, so that you map doesn’t get outdated.

Memory - the more memory the gps unit has, the more locations, waypoints, landmarks, and maps you can save.

3 - The time it takes a GPS to find and display information. This depends on the number of channels a GPS has. The more channels the unit has the better the reception. Take this into consideration. You don’t want to have to pull over and wait for it to get map data if you make a wrong turn.

4 - Does the unit speak street names? This is very helpful. If it does not say the street names and it tells you to turn right. You may have to glance at the unit to check the street name. This can be dangerous.

5 - What type of batteries are used with the GPS? Are they normal rechargeable AA batteries or are they special manufacturer batteries? Also how long do they last.

6 - Bluetooth is great for those who need to use cell phones while driving, With Bluetooth the driver can make and receive hands-free calls through the unit’s speaker and microphone, and view their telephone book and access caller ID on the screen. What an amazing feature. Of course blue-tooth enabled units are little more expensive.

Those are the six things you need to know before you buy a GPS.

Heres a quick note about mapping data:

All Magellan Garmin and NAVIGON GPS units use NAVTEQ mapping data, while TomTom uses Tele Atlas. I’ve done research online and found that both NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas are both good and I would not base my decision on which mapping data the gps uses.
