GPS Navigation Systems have come a long way
Gps systems have come a long way since they were first designed for the US millitary. The first signal from NAVSTAR 1 was received on Feb. 22, 1978. NAVSTAR 1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was the first of 24 satellites that make up the Global Positioning System (GPS). The first generation of satellites that make up the Global Positioning Systems 24 satellites were launched between Feb. 22, 1978 and Oct. 9, 1985. Since it First became operational the Global Positioning Systems has revolutionized the way America goes to war and provides a GPS system in which the world relies on for precise navigation.
The Global Positioning System’s constellation of orbiting satellites is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. The unit is the host wing at Schriever Air Force Base, located in east Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are responsible for tracking and maintaining the command and control, warning, navigational, and communications satellites for Air Force Space Command as well as the Global Positioning System satellites. Full Operational Capability was declared by NAVSTAR in April 1995 (NAVSTAR is an acronym for NAVigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, and is the official U.S. Government name given to the GPS satellite system).
The US government granted the Global Positioning System available for civilian use in the late 1980s and with no subscription fees or setup charges to use the GPS system the civilian GPS market exploded, especially in the last decade. A new generation of sophisticated GPS satellites are replacing the older satellites and there are now 34 GPS satellites in orbit that provide combat capability for military applications and aircraft navigation aids. Civilian applications include ATM’s, bank and stock market transactions as well as power grid management. Currently 31 of the 34 GPS satellites in orbit transmit navigation and timing signals to civilian and military users around the world.
The civilian GPS system wasn’t always as it is today and the US military is still keeping the most accurate Global Positioning Systems available classified for national security. But GPS upgrades for two new civilian signals to enhanced user accuracy and reliability, particularly with respect to aviation safety were planned in 1998. Then on May 2, 2000 “Selective Availability” was discontinued as a result of the 1996 executive order, allowing users to receive a non-degraded GPS signal globally, and in 2004 QUALCOMM announced the successful tests of assisted GPS for mobile phones that led the way for the GPS aided cell phones that are widely used today.
In 2005, the first third generation GPS satellite was launched and began transmitting a second civilian signal for enhanced user performance. Then in September of 2007 the Air Force completed a four-phase transition of the Global Positioning Systems ground segment to it’s new Architecture Evolution Plan. The ground segment’s provide command and control of the satellites and generates the navigation message for satellites to broadcast to the users GPS device to calculate their earth’s position. The new Gps satellites include new high-powered, anti-jam military-code, along with other accuracy, reliability, and data integrity improvements for both civil and military users. This modernized version of the world’s greatest free utility was designed to ensure the US has the most precise and secure positioning, navigation and timing capability through 2030.
In 2004 the United States signed an agreement with the European Community establishing cooperation with Europe’s planned Galileo system. Galileo is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is currently being built by the European Union and is separate from but complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. The European Union’s Galileo system should be operational by 2013. The European Community’s political aim is to provide an independent GPS system that the European nations can rely on in times of war or political disagreement, because both Russia or the USA could disable use of their national systems by others (through encryption).
The Russian GPS system GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system that was developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. Like the European GPS system the Russian GPS system also functions separate from but is complimentary to the United States Global Positioning System. Russia began launching satellites for their GPS system into space on October 12, 1982 and was completed in 1995. The system rapidly fell into disrepair fallowing the collapse of the Russian economy but in 2001 the Russian government began restoring the system with hopes of restoring global coverage by the end of 2009.
Depending on the GPS unit a GPS receiver only needs a signal from 3-4 satellites to calculate the units position and will work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or set up fees like with a cell phone to operate GPS receivers and although some GPS receivers have extra features like real time traffic updates that will have a monthly charge, some GPS receivers like Garmins Nuvi “T” series come with free live traffic for the life of the unit. Today’s GPS is extremely accurate thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. Garmin’s 12 parallel channel receivers are very quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain a strong lock even in dense foliage or city’s with tall buildings because they continuously track signals from up to 12 satellites at any given time. Even if a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver loses signals from 8 satellites at once it will still function properly.
WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Global Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on GPS for all phases of flight, including the precision approach to airport’s within its coverage area. All though originally intended for aviation most GPS receivers today are WAAS-enabled including automotive, boating chartplotters and hand-held units. WAAS uses a network of ground based reference stations, in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in the GPS satellites’ signals. Measurements from these reference stations are routed to master stations and then they send correction messages to geostationary WAAS satellites. Those satellites then broadcast the correction messages back to Earth, where WAAS-enabled GPS receivers use the correction data while computing their positions to improve accuracy. WAAS enabled GPS receivers are accurate to within 3 meters and that make them the most accurate GPS receivers for civilian use on the market today. In fact a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is traveling in (as long as the mapping program supports “lane assist” directions) and With no additional equipment or fees required to take advantage of WAAS-enabled GPS receivers they are becoming as common as cell phone’s.

gps live traffic report

Garmin Review:
Indisputably, Garmin is the world’s biggest manufacturer of consumer gps and the name has almost become synonymous with the product. The company has a long and envious history of producing quality and versatile GPS. Garmin has produced many kinds of GPS - some for automobiles, hikers, etc. Within each category there are different models to suit every activity.
For example the Garmin StreetPilot c340 has a text to speech functionality. So you have the added advantage of hands free operation and then the ability to concentrate on the road whilst driving and not looking at the GPS display to see what is written there. This mode of operation can take complex commands such as Turn Right at Next Intersection. This feature is a big plus for people who need to keep looking ahead on the road whilst driving fast.
This device can also be fitted with a traffic receiver so you can get real time traffic information. With this
feature, you can avoid traffic jams, road, diversions etc so you can reach your destination quicker.
Garmin also has the Nuvi 200 which is quite basic compared to others by the same manufacturer. But they come with some interesting fittings such as the unit converter. For those who want enhanced functionality, you can subscribe to travel information services.
This low cost range has some good features too such as the SD card slot to allow for the installation of add ons like extra maps.
The favorite in the 300 series of the garmein GPS is the Garmnin. 396. This product is an improvement over the 200 series as it displays information on satellite weather, has colorful maps and displays terrain warnings. Perhaps the biggest feature is the ability of the 396 to warn the user of any disturbances in the area of approach. For example if there is war or a conflict, you are informed accurately. The 396 also deserves some commendation for its crystal clear images which are visible in even poor light.
Magellan Review:
Magellan GPS is the preferred navigation system by many people because of its high adaptability. You can use the Magellan GPS as a portable hand held device or mounted permanently in your vehicle to give weather, traffic and road directions.
The uses of the Magellan GPS are beyond description. As a navigation system you can use it to find your way in unknown cities - saving the time you spend asking people for directions and sometimes getting lost due to poor descriptions and cardinals. Aside that, the Magellan GPS can be used as a car tracker. If you had you car stolen, you can use the signals beaming from the system to track the location of the car.
Magellan GPS come in various models and each has its specialties. The Magellan Triton displays full color maps and data with excellent graphics. This product is very rugged and is waterproof. The Magellan Maestro is ultra slim and touch screen enabled. You can see your maps in 2D or 3D modes as you want.
This unit also has voice alerts so you do not need to read the instructions on screen.
The Magellan CrossoverGPS is pocket-sized but has all the advanced features of the car and hand held types. It is good for hiking, camping, fishing or other personal outdoor activity.
The Magellan RoadMate has thousands of road maps and Point of Interest data. So you never get lost with this device. You have both audio and visual road directions. The outstanding feature of the Magellan crossover is the Integrated Receiver Feeds LIVE incident reports that brings you real time update of road conditions.
The eXplorist can save tracks and other Points of Interest in a more versatile way than the others. The map can be expanded and has been designed for both right and left handed people. You have one touch access to all other features and the menu of the system. The backlight makes the display readable during day and night without trouble. Most importantly, you can customize the screen to display only the information you want.

How do traffic services reports for GPS-in-auto work, and do you recommend a particular…?
…one? (I live in Connecticut)
I was in Japan, and saw this great traffic service on my host’s GPS, showing color-coded where the tie-ups were and how to avoid, and I thought what a great concept for traffic in a crowded area. But I was told there they have GPS signals coming from the cars to the service, a locational approach that might seem a bit instrusive in the U.S. (i.e. the service is tracking your location?) But I see there are such traffic services for GPS in the U.S. - how do they work? Do you recommend one?
GPS traffic reports very by location. A lot of the time they work with the traffic companies that have systems set up to be able to do something like that. Here in Los Angelos since it is very busy and there is a huge network for GPS traffic reports. Chances are if you don’t have the ability to look up traffic on the internet before going out, you will not be likely to find a GPS unit to do it for you.
In other locations where there is not much traffic, you will not find that type of service. Usually for traffic updates there is an additional fee per month that needs to be paid.

GPS: Mio C230 or Garmin Nuvi 200? Which one should I choose?
I’m on shopping for a cheap and good GPS device. After some research, I found that both Mio C230 and Garmin Nuvi 200 have many good reviews and affordable for my pocket, but don’t know which one I should buy. Please help me to pick. Or if you know any better GPS device that have about those’s price, please recommend me.
P.S.: Someone says that Mio C230 can be hacked to have many features and new updated maps. Can I also update new maps for the Garmin without any charge? Thank you
A few weeks ago I got the Nuvi 200 from, “Best Buy”….the sales guy there actually talked me down from a pricier one (Tomtom–said alot get returned)–said most employees there have Garmins. I’m (& my boyfriend who is Mr. Anti-technology) really impressed by it. The other day, we were about 1-1/2 hours south from where we live and he wanted barbeque food. I punched the “food” button and it pulls up about 15 different restaurant types. I hit “barbeque” and it pulled up a load of those, starting from the closest, with an arrow of direction, and the miles. You touch the one you want and it give the address and phone no. You can also pull up ATM’s, hospitals, gas stations shopping (broken into types), etc…. It’s amazing. There’s so many different things you can do with it…..I love it.
I don’t know anything about the Mio, but am totally impressed by the Nuvi. They had a really nice case for around $20 it just slips into. The only thing you would need if you want is a charger to bring it into the house…it has the car one included.

How to enable GPS features on Nokia X6?
Hi, I live in syria and in this country, all mobiles are sold with the GPS features disabled. I have nokia X6. While searching the internet, I have learned that the GPS chip is not missing on the X6, it is “only” disabled. I would like to enable it but of course, the official Nokia retailer in Syria (Mabco corporation) don’t want to help and I don’t find a tutorial to activate my GPS ship. I have only the Bluetooth GPS option What can I do? Thanks
N.B: if you know if there is a website for downloading symbian firmwares, it would be good.
Why don’t you read phone’s user guide and learn how to use it. See http://europe.nokia.com/appmanager/UnitedStatesEnglishEUROPE_NOKIA_COM_3/Get_support;JSESSIONID_NCOM=gQ29LQxB7rbqJ0c1PktpY3Kvy3Zzv1ZsX0k89h1zhtdQ15LnWVQT!1858476680?_nfpb=true&_windowLabel=T402877024331264051638784&_pageLabel=P3117731&wsrp-urlType=blockingAction&wsrp-url=&wsrp-requiresRewrite=&wsrp-navigationalState=&wsrp-interactionState=_action%3D/pageflows/EMEASupportTool/begin&wsrp-mode=&wsrp-windowState=
The GPS settings are under Settings -> Phone -> Applications -> Positioning -> Positioning methods.
Make sure that “Internal GPS” is turned on, if you have a data plan, activate “Assisted GPS” as well - it will generate some data traffic but it will also improve the speed of finding the location.
Other than that, ensure that you have the latest firmware ( http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update ) and install the latest version of the Ovi Maps application (free) from http://maps.nokia.com

garmin gps now

If you’re looking for an innovative and powerful fitness aide, the Forerunner Garmin GPS is worth your consideration. Here are seven top reasons which make the Forerunner an excellent addition to your running regimen.
There will be less gadgets associated with this option. Runners should be light, unencumbered by gadgets that add weight and increase drag. The features you will get with the Garmin Forerunner will blow your mind. Forerunner GPS is one of the powerful and accurate GPS which also features a chest-mounted heart rate monitor. Even if you choose to forego the monitor to save money, choosing the Forerunner ensures that you can upgrade later without needing to purchase anything other than the strap.
* Keep your routine fresh. Garmin’s rich and detailed maps help locate routes you may not have considered. Additionally, by planning your run and deliberately choosing the scenic route, your workout can be a pleasant interlude instead of the tedium you may experience when you take the same route each day.
Track it all together. Statistics are important to evaluating your progress and setting goals. The Forerunner combines two functions, route mapping through GPS satellite-based location, with the gathering of fitness statistics, in a single device. Whether running for sport, exercise or enjoyment, it should be liberating, unstifled by recording details or keeping files.
* Train out of the box. Although training is one the most important ingredients in any exercise regimen, it is often overlooked entirely or intermittent at best. Garmin Training Center software, included with the Forerunner, makes a personalizable training experience available to every Forerunner owner. For professional runners, or those needing more features than the Garmin Training Center provides, the TrainingPeaks.Their web site will provide guidance on creating running strategies as well as useful advice for one and all.
* Forget those wires. As we become a more technological society, it seems as if the devices meant to free us instead tangle us in masses of cables that may be lost, broken or confused. The newer Forerunner 405 abandons this trend, communicating wirelessly for greater convenience and less hassle.
* Make running less solitary. If running alone does not appeal to you purchasing the Forerunner might be just what you need. You will almost have the illusion of a running buddy to compete against! Also, the Garmin Connect social network allows for route and statistic sharing, helping you share in the experiences of runners around the world.
* Consider a heart rate monitor. If cardiovascular fitness is your goal, you should purchase a good heart rate monitor so you can keep a tangible record of your performance. In addition to tracking heart rate, monitors also keep tabs on calories burned and other vital statistics. If you’re in the market for a heart rate monitor, the Forerunner Garmin GPS makes an excellent choice, and provides an inexpensive upgrade path should you wish to add one later.
The previous points make the Forerunner Garmin GPS line a compelling choice, regardless of whether you’re a running newcomer or a seasoned trainer. The Forerunner entirely revamps your hitherto routine enhancing your running efficiency every time.
