Garmin has broken new ground when it released Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS. This is a very ultraportable device that is specifically aimed to be the tool that a travel needs in his excursions.

I have a pocket pc, gps device with it, 2 cell phones, 1 verizon and 1 cingular. Too much What do I get rid of

I use the pda to test software and design small interfaces. I had the cheap software and little gps unit that is pretty small. One cell phone is off contract, it’s the verizon. The cingular is my home phone transferred to cellphone. I wanted to keep my home phone number I’ve had for 20 years but Verizon COULD NOT transfer it. I tried. I call my verizon friends on the verizon and cingular on that phone. Also Cingular gives you a rollover plan.
I have too much stuff to carry and like to keep things compact and cheap. I have high-speed internet at home with an N router. I would like to share this with a neighbor who lives nearby and split the cost.
All this data and phone stuff I want to pare down as much as possible without losing quality. Help!

Get rid of it all. You don’t need electronic umbilical cords. If you can’t read a map, you shouldn’t be driving - you don’t need a GPS unit. And, if you dump the cell phones, you will start appreciating the peace and quiet of being off the grid.

Using Your Laptop As a GPS Unit

If you don’t want to invest in a hand-held or vehicle-mounted GPS unit, you do have the much less expensive option of converting your laptop into a GPS unit with special software.

If your laptop has a good battery and an embedded wi-fi program, you may prefer investing the money into this software, which is very easy to use. With this software you can locate POIs (points or place of interest), or upload new ones for future reference. You can upload maps for regions where you will be traveling.

Of course, not everybody relishes the idea of having to keep a laptop computer up on the dashboard of their car like some police officer. Is cold weather bad for my laptop?

I am planning to head off for a road trip to visit my friend and to hang out at the Mall of America.. I want to take my laptop with me (I have MS Streets with GPS on it) so I don’t get lost, but it would end up spending most of the day.. well at least 5 hours in her car and the temperature is expected to get down to around 0 F that night.. would it hurt my laptop to be out in her car in the parking garage? I was planning on leaving at her house until i remembered that I have never meet her 4 roommates before and don’t plan to leave it just laying around their house. Please let me know… i am going to be leaving home in about 14 hours and need to print maps if I’m not taking it with me. Thanks

Leaving it in your car shouldn’t be a problem, just keep it somewhere out of sight so it doesn’t become a target for thieves (preferably put it somewhere out of sight before you get there so no one sees you hiding it).

One bit of advice though, when you take it indoors again, wait a while before you turn it on and let it warm up! Turning it on when it’s too cold can fry your hard drive!

Magellan’s GPS’s are broken up into two lines, the Maestros and the RoadMates. Both are great devices and both have access to the Triple A Tour Book, if you’re a subscriber. (That’s a great proprietary feature that only Magellan offers.)

The Maestro line is further divided into the 4000 and the 3000 series. The only big difference between the two is the 4000 series have the larger, wide screens, whereas the 3000 models have the normal, 3.5-inch screen. Any model in the maestro line with a number greater than 4220 or 3220 will be a Magellan GPS text to speech device. The lower numbered models don’t all have text to speech.

Most of the RoadMates have text to speech.

Right now, you can get a Magellan GPS text to speech vehicle navigator for around $150.

Honestly, Garmin and TomTom both have text to speech devices that currently sell for less, if all you’re interested in is basic navigation and text to speech. So, although I really love Magellan, if price is your issue, check out Garmin and TomTom before you buy.

I find the Magellan more user-friendly, personally. You can’t go wrong with either unit - just go with your gut feeling.

Im looking for a gps, and IVe narrowed it down to 3 choices. I like the Garmins because of the Trip Computer, Traffic Reciever, and detailed POI info. I like the TomTom because of the IQ route (is it really effective) and the Lane Guidance System. The Garmins are more expensive (TT, 285,265) but I dont know if the Garmins are worth the extra $20-30. The 340 S is a newer model than the Garmins. This will be my first GPS, and Ive had experience with TomToms (ONE series) and I wasnt really impressed. Any suggestions
