What’s Hot in Motorcycling? Motorcycle GPS

Anyone who has used a great GPS system, including a great motorcycle GPS system, will know how user friendly and useful a good GPS can be. With modern GPS technology coming of age and modern digital mapping technology improving, a great motorcycle GPS can turn a ride into a pleasure.

What is GPS? For those who don’t know, GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a navigation and positioning technology pioneered by the US army, that has been taken to it’s ultimate and turned into a complete user friendly modern navigation solution. Whilst in the past GPS was really just the province of the military, the technology is now so good, and so cheap, that anyone needing the ultimate in navigation can afford it.

That includes motorcyclists, modern motorcycle GPS has also come of age.

Basically GPS works by cross referencing the signals from a number of satellites above the head of the user and using those references to plot the user’s position on the globe. It will only work where there are available satellites, so if you can’t pick up the signals your GPS won’t work.

Modern GPS is accurate, depending on the number of satellites available, to within less than a yard. So anyone seeking to navigate by use of a GPS system can obtain extremely accurate positioning. And this is now user friendly. In the past this information was only available as a longitude and latitude figure. This was only really useful to someone with the technical expertise to actually use this to plot the position on a map.

However now modern GPS, including high quality motorcycle GPS systems, can combine digital mapping technology with GPS positioning to produce an extremely user friendly outcome. Basically the position plotted by the GPS can be overlaid onto a digital map to show the GPS user, including the motorcyclist, their exact position on a digital map, and tell them how to get from where they are to where they want to go.

So motorcyclists can now buy dedicated motorcycle GPS systems that they can use as a total navigation system. There are various ways they can do this. It’s quite possible for the motorcycle rider, who may also, for example, be a keen hiker, to get a handheld portable GPS unit that can be taken anywhere, including mounted on a motorcycle. Download and install some maps that cover the area you want to navigate in and portable GPS can be used by just about anyone just about anywhere.

There are, however, some drawbacks using portable GPS for a motorcycle GPS system. When mounted on a motorcycle a GPS unit needs some special qualities. It needs to be vibration resistant, as a motorcycle has vibrations. It needs to be weather resistant as any equipment on a motorcycle will be out in the weather, including the rain. And it needs to be readable in all conditions, including direct sun.

And a motorbike rider needs to be able to program or use it whilst wearing heavy motorcycle gloves.

Luckily there are some excellent GPS manufacturers who have come to the rescue of the motorcyclist by manufacturing dedicated motorcycle GPS systems that combine all these features and more. The GPS mounts are designed to allow mounting without the problems of vibration, and the GPS units are vibration resistant, waterproof and can be read, and used, by the motorcyclist.

And even better, the best motorcycle GPS units can be used without the need for reading the screen. With bluetooth technology built in they can send directions by voice direct to the helmet of the motorbike rider, so the rider doesn’t need to take his eyes off the road.

Program in where you want to ride and it will take you there every turn, turn by turn. Ask it to and it will tell you all the places of interest along the way, like food or fuel stops, and accommodation. With the right extras it will even tell you in real time where the traffic jams are and how to ride around them. This saves you both time and fuel.

And along the way your motorcycle GPS unit may even allow you to play your favorite music or do the odd phone call or three.

And a good motorcycle GPS system should set you back less than $1000. It’s money extremely well spent for a motorcyclist who likes long, hassle free rides.

So if you ride a motorbike, and have a lazy $1000, you can’t do better than spending it on a quality motorcycle GPS system. It will repay you over and over.

GPS Tracking System - How Its Components Work

Born of the best minds from a concept so simple is an exceptional

complex system, the GPS tracking system. It is made up of three

componentsL satellites that orbit the earth, control and monitoring

stations and the GPS receivers. It is a radionavigation system

providing reliable positioning, navigating, and timing services not

just for the military but also to civilian users as well in any part

of the world. The GPS tracking system has drastically changed the

world of navigation through land, sea and air, in all weather, 24/7.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space-based

radionavigation system that provides reliable positioning, navigation,

and timing services to civilian users on a continuous worldwide basis

– freely available to all. For anyone with a GPS receiver, the system

will provide location and time. GPS provides accurate location and

time information for an unlimited number of people in all weather, day

and night, anywhere in the world.

In the 1960s the U.S. Navy and Air Force worked together on a number

of systems that would be able to provide a variety of navigation

applications. In 1973 the Department of Defense aimed to direct the

services in unifying their systems. The concept of the tracking

system would be atomic clocks onboard satellites was tested

successfully by an earlier Navy program called TIMATION. The Air

Force would operate the new system called the Navstar Global

Positioning System. From then on, it has since been known as simply

GPS or Global Positioning System.

The GPS tracking System Satellites

Today’s GPS Operational Constellation is funded and controlled by the

U.S. Department of Defense and being operated by the U.S. Military.

It is comprised of three major components: a “constellation” of

satellites in Earth orbit, ground stations that controlled the system

and receivers hand carried by the users. It was so designed so that

these receivers could be made small and inexpensive and would not

require atomic clocks.

The GPS tracking system is an aerospace technology comprising of at

least 24 operational satellites at all times. Each satellite is on a

circular orbit 20,000 kilometers above the Earth on a 12-hour period.

In order to make sure that these satellites are detected from anywhere

on the surface of the Earth, the satellites are divided into six

groups having four space vehicles each. The six orbital planes

completely surround the Earth, equally spaced 60 degrees apart and at

an angle of about 50 degrees with respect to the equatorial plane.

Each group is assigned a different path to follow. The orbit altitude

is such, that the GPS satellites recapitulate the same ground track

and configuration at approximately over any point each in 24 hours.

The GPS tracking system’s navigation message consists of time-tagged

data bits that mark the time of transmission of each subframe at the

time they are being transmitted by the space vehicle. A data bit

frame consists of 1500 bits divided into five 300-bit subframes and a

data frame is being transmitted at an interval of 30 seconds. There

are three six-second subframes containing orbital and clock data.

Precise clock corrections are sent in subframe one and orbital data

sets or ephemeris data parameters for the transmitting space vehicle

are sent in subframes two and three. Various pages of the system data

are being transmitted in subframes four and five. So the GPS tracking

system has an entire set of twenty-five frames or 125 subframes

creating the complete navigation message sent over a 12.5-minute

period.

The GPS Tracking System Equipment on the Ground

Ground stations are used so that each satellite orbit are accurately

tracked. The GPS tracking system has ground stations which is

comprised of a receiver and antenna, as well as communication tools to

transmit the data to the data center. When the GPS satellites supply

specially coded signals, the omni-directional antenna at each site

picks up the signals and that is processed in a receiver. The

receiver then separates the signals in various channels for a

particular satellite and frequency at a particular time. Once the

signals are isolated, the receiver now decodes them and splits them

into individual frequencies to calculate position, velocity, direction

and time anywhere on Earth.

At least four GPS satellite signals consisting of space segments are

used in computing positions in three-dimensional locations - latitude,

longitude and altitude - and the time offset in the receiver clock.

All GPS tracking system satellites have synchronized operations so

that the signals are transmitted at the speed of light to the

equipment on the ground. Each GPS satellite broadcasts data

indicating its location and current time.

Since the GPS tracking system sites are constructed throughout the

world and are being monitored by different institutions worldwide,

there are many different data center locations. The role of the data

center is to both monitor and control the GPS tracking system

stations. The data center uses an automated computer system in

retrieving and analyzing data from the receivers. Once processed, the

data, including the original raw data, are sent to scientists around

the glob for use in various applications.

From laboriously built landmarks by our ancestors to shooting the

stars to chronometers to satellites, our technology has evolved faster

than we could ever imagine. The GPS tracking system is the most

recent and significant advancement in navigation and positioning

technology. This new constellation of artificial stars serves this

important need for both the military and civilian users and is now

fast becoming important in everyday life.

It is not effective to attach an inverter to this to convert the power to 110 volt AC adapters which in turn convert the power back to DC for your personal electronics.

You could use the solar cell set to charge a marine grade deep cycle battery over several hours, attach an inverter (for example this one http://www.batteryjunction.com/marathon-80w-pi1.html) to the battery and then plug your AC adapters into the inverter and run your devices or chargers.

However, this is an incredibly inefficient waste of power as you convert the power back and forth between DC to AC to DC again. It wastes power as it spills off much of the solar energy collected as heat in the different steps and different adapters.

Connecting the inverter directly to the solar charger will not work well because it doesn’t produce enough power in 12 volts (watts) for it to run an inverter.

In short, don’t do it, it isn’t worth the effort.

In order to make this work effectively you should fine the automobile adapters available for your devices and plug the auto adapters for your devices directly into the female cigarette lighter socket provided with the solar briefcase charger.

Many items only require 5 or 6 volts DC power, so the car adapters throttle the power down to the amount the devices need from 12 volts and smooth out any spikes or drops in power.

If you have a base station, you can also attach the Solar Power Briefcase to 12 volt car/marine battery and charge the large lead acid battery while you are away using your devices and then when you return, detach the solar charger and attach a female cigarette lighter adapter to the battery.

You can then attach your devices to the charged car/marine battery using a female cigarette lighter socket and charge or power them using the car adapters described earlier.

Most radio’s have a DC plugin port. You can build or purchase adapters that step down the 12 V power to the radio’s power needs.

In short, power your devices directly from the solar cell using the car adapter plugs made for them or charge a larger battery as a power resevoir and plug your car adapters into it when it is dark which allows you to charge devices when you are not using them while sleeping.

GPS Overload - How to Choose the Perfect Device for Your Needs

Buying a Global Positioning System (GPS) to meet your needs may not be as simple as one might think. There are a myriad of different devices, for many different purposes.

The first thing to consider when buying a GPS device is its primary use. Will you be using it on the road, on the trail, or on the water?

On the road devices are usually temporary mounted in the vehicle with suction cups or bean bags. Most of these devices have turn-by-turn instructions and auto correction if you miss a turn.

We recommend getting a device with the auto-correction feature, that way you don’t have to mess with the device if you take a wrong turn, it will recalculate the route for you automatically.

There are some devices that are also portable, so you can unplug them from your vehicle and take them with you as you walk around in a large city.

My favorite in this category is the Garmin c330, c340, and c530 series. They are a wonderful size for using it in the vehicle and small enough to use as a portable. They have city maps pre-loaded, so they are not much use off-road.

Many of the newest designs have built in picture viewers, MP3 players, traffic updates (careful, that usually costs extra!!), and many other bells and whistles.

One of the best features of the Garmin c-series line is the ability to ask for the closest landmarks, such as food, gas, shopping, golf courses, etc.

Like anything you buy, make sure you understand what the device has and what you want to use for before making the final decision!

One of the most asked questions is should I buy the car with GPS already in it?

Personally, I don’t like that option because it limits how you can upgrade, and the device cannot be used in multiple vehicles.

In addition, some car manufacturers are charging several hundred dollars to update the map data on these devices and you have little choice in using them to do this.

The GPS market is an ever changing market and I like to be in control of which device I want to purchase.

Having said that, I am choosing to have a device mounted to my dash or windshield (suction cups….also illegal in some states, so make sure you know which ones!!!) with wires trailing to the power source.

On the trail devices are handhelds which depict topographical, or basic mapping data, not detailed street level details. These are great for hiking and geocaching. They have the ability to either import or download coordinates of a location (called waypoints) and then tell you how close you are to that waypoint.

Ever fear of getting lost hiking, well, you can set different points as you walk, like a breadcrumb trail so you can get yourself out the way you came in. These devices range from $80-$500+ depending on the different capabilities of the device.

Higher end models allow you to buy pre-loaded map detail on memory cards, so they can double as driving directions, however, they still don’t have the turn-by-turn capabilities.

GPS devices used on the water are fixed mount devices. These devices can have water depth, temperature, etc, especially helpful for the fisherman.

Maps that can be downloaded can have tidal waters, known shipwrecks, ports, and are very detailed. There is a huge range of devices to consider in this area.

Keep in mind that mapping software used on these devices changes about 1-2 times per year. Less frequently for the maps on the water.

Understand what your devices downloading capabilities are so you don’t get stuck with outdated maps forever!

Be aware that maps change, you have to be somewhat flexible when following the directions. I have had instances where it tells you to “turn left here”, only to have that be the wrong way on a one-way street!!!

In other words, these are guides to get you close to where you need to be, you cannot use them as gospel….common sense should prevail!

I remember back when I was a teenager I went fishing with an older friend. He got a hot tip from his buddy that there were walleyes biting on a local lake. As I said in an earlier post, I didn’t fish for walleyes at the time, so I didn’t really care too much, but I was interested.

There’s no way around it… you really need to have some sort of electronics to tell you how far the bottom of the lake is beneath your boat. Anybody who does a great deal of fishing should really invest in some sort of sonar. The word “sonar” is an abbreviation for “SOund, NAvigation and Ranging.” It was developed during World War II to track enemy submarines. A sonar consists of a transmitter, transducer, receiver and display.

Fishing sonar units transmit an electrical impulse that is converted into a sound wave by the transducer and sent into the water. This wave strikes an object and rebounds, the echo hit the transducer, which converts it back into an electric signal, which is interpreted by the receiver and sent to the display. Sound travels in water at a constant speed of about 4800 feet per second. Knowing this, the time between the transmitted signal and the received echo can be measured and the distance to the object determined. This process repeats several times each second.

In practical terms, the display of most fishing sonar will consist of a liquid crystal display. On most units the screen scrolls by to give you a series of readings as the signals bounce off the lake bottom. Even the least expensive units will have a similar display, although most at the lower-end will be black and white. The scale on the side gives you the depth reading and a solid or continuous horizontal line represents the bottom. Fish will appear as “hooks” somewhere between the surface and the bottom. Sonar gives you an instantaneous reading so you have a constant stream of information flowing to the unit. If you are cruising along the shoreline or along a point, you can watch your sonar to locate sharp drops or humps below the surface. In addition, most fisherman will use the sonar to determine whether or not there are any fish hanging around. If they don’t see those tell-tale hooks, they generally won’t waste any time tossing a bait in the water. Pretty tough to catch what isn’t there!

As if this innovation weren’t enough, we are now in the era of the combined technologies of sonar and GPS. Many of you have a Garmin or some other such navigation device in your car. Well, imagine how nice it would be if you had a detailed contour map of the lake you were fishing right on your depth-finder. Well, I’m pleased to tell you that this technology has been available for quite some time now. The image to the left is a typical image produced on modern fishing electronics. Units that include GPS features typically have a slot to accept an SD memory card produced by companies like LakeMaster or Navionics. These companies spend hours mapping popular lakes and then produce high quality maps like the one to the left. The best of these maps include very detailed countours as fine a three feet. Combined with global positioning, your boat’s position is overlayed on this map (which you can zoom in or our for more or less precision) allowing you to have a visual representation of your position on the lake relative to the physical features you see on the map. It used to take me a good 10 minutes buzzing back and forth to locate a mid-lake rock pile on my favorite local lake. And even then I might not have been exactly sure which end I was at. With the LakeMaster chip in my Lowrance I just leave the landing and head right to the rockpile. Guesswork gone. As with all things electronic, prices range from reasonable to ridiculous. You can expect to shell out $600-$700 for a color sonar/gps unit with a 5″ screen. Way more if you go for the bigger screen.

The bottom line is that the walleye fisherman’s arsenal really needs to include some form of sonar. A basic unit that gives you depth and fish marking will suffice for most anglers. This way it will be much easier to conquer job #1 when venturing out to your favorite lake… and that’s finding the fish!
