Best GPS Units - Buy Now!

gps unit comparisonsNot all car GPS are born equal. The GPS principle and purpose remained the same since the first models came out a few years ago. Now, from being highly specialized devices, GPS’s have left the realm of the military to reach into almost any car that is driving on our roads these days.

You now have GPS for cars, hikers, bikers, boats etc. But the most common models are car models.

What will you seek on a car GPS?

Maps and updates are the heart of a good GPS. In some countries, places and road names change every time a new regime comes to power. You don’t want to set foot in those places without and up-to-date map.

Have you got good eyes? If you not, I advise you to stay away from mobile phone GPS models. These often run on ridiculously small displays. And in any case most of these gadgets don’t even come with a mounting arm for your car.

Points of interest have become a standard feature on most new GPS models. What are they? Well they are what they claim to be: points of interest. That is anything that may be of interest to you in your journey: museums, cinemas, theatres etc.

I’ve always been sceptical about the other gimmicks that you find on most new GPS models: a slide show view etc. These are stuff you never get to use. Not only are they present on most of your other gadgets but they look more like a marketing overkill than anything else.

I mean, I have a better slideshow viewer on both my mobile and my digital camera. It’s called, they say, convergence: that is when your cellular phone is a digital camera, is a GPS, is a computer. But your still need to own a computer, a digital camera and a GPS.

I am not going to finish this without mentioning one important aspect. In fact the most important feature: the possibility of downloading updated maps. Don’t take that for granted: not all manufacturers make free downloads available. On some models, get ready to pay every time an update come out.

Garmin GPS Reviews - Buy Now!

compare gps unitThe new range of Garmin nuvi GPS breaks new ground in portability by being 25% slimmer than previous nuvis. Named nuvi 1200 and nuvi 1300, the models also serve users out of the car as the devices are equipped with the pedestrian navigation and easily fit into a shirt pocket or purse. The nuvi 1200 series has 3.5 inch screens and the nuvi 1300 series are designed with 4.5 inch displays. They offer the free traffic service for the lifetime. Also, some of the models have features like the text-to-speech and Bluetooth.

A division of the Garmin Ltd., Garmin International Inc. has been the global leader among the GPS service providers. The launch of the nuvi series has certainly added new feather in their cap. Its unique navigation service is mainly the result of the incorporation of CityXplorer maps. However, the service is optional and the user can download the maps of the select places to the device.

Thanks to the CityXplorer, a tourist can explore different routes in an unknown city. These routes include public transport options like tramway, bus, metro and even the suburban railways. However, the CityXplorer maps are only available for select cities in Europe and North America.

Apart from this new service, the nuvi lines also add new dimensions to their existing GPS services. It includes free traffic alerts as well as Lane Assists. These are very helpful in unfamiliar exits and turns. There is also text-to-speech that announces the name of exits and streets so you need not take your eyes off the road.

Another very interesting feature of this device is the ecoRoute. This suggests the shortest distance and faster times thus saving on fuel consumption. On route, the user will also get updates on how to save on fuel.

The 1300 models have a 4.3 inch touch screen display. They cover the lower 48 states while the nuvi 1370T covers both North America and Europe. Apart from the common features, the 1390T also allow users to view a realistic image of upcoming junctions.

On the other hand, the 1200 models have 3.5 inch touch screen displays. All the 1200 series comes preloaded with maps of lower 48 states. The Garmin nuvi 1260T has additional features like Bluetooth, speed limit display and Navteq Traffic receiver. Price ranges from $250 to $350.

While inaugurating the new range of the GPS in CeBIT in Hanover, Dan Bartel, the Vice President for Sales of Garmin, said that the new range would assist the users even when they are traveling in public transport and foot. According to him, the devices cater to the exact needs of the users. In fact, the portability has added value to the product. Certainly, the PND or the personal navigation device has never been so personal before. The slim profile and light weight of these new Garmin GPS devices will help users carry it around more comfortably. This is an important feature that is likely to contribute to the popularity of the device.

Garmin 255w Best Price - Buy Now!

buy a gps unit

If you planning to do a road trip and you horrible with directions. You need considering buying a Good GPS system for your car.

If you only need it short term a way, you have a number of options.

Do you have a friend you could borrow one from. Consider renting a car and getting the satellite thing with it.

You may using cell phone. Many cell phones are satellite friendly. Most directions sites (for example - mapquest site) have an application you can download to your phone, and then "send" your phone the directions from mapquest.

But, consider this: buy good newest GPS navigation system for your car. You may buy something with touch screen, speech capabilities, traffic information, MP3 and bluetooth capability, etc.

To have a functional GPS Tracking System the GPS device must also be able to communicate with a tracking service information about its’ location. Therefore the GPS device must be both a Receiver and a Transmitter.

No handheld GPS devise is really great for a CAR!!

I have read a few reviews for some GPS systems and Garmin are the best navigational systems in my opinion. You may pay a little more for Garmin over Magellan and Tomtom but it is worth is faster route calculations, finds the satellites faster, doesn’t crash as much, etc… Also the user interface of Garmin is very good.

Not long ago, I just bought a Tom Tom GPS, but I used a Garmin GPS when I rented car last year. I love the Garmin. I think I will return my Tom Tom and get a Garmin GPS. I used my Garmin in my home town. It gives me turn by turn directions, including giving me the street names. I can choose which voice I want to use, whether male or female. I can even choose which accent I want it to have.

The unit also has a point of interest feature which allows me to find the nearest location of any restaurant, hotel, gas station, car wash, bank, etc. no matter what location I happen to be. It told me to turn left on a 1 way street that went to the right, it tried to kill me. The other thing about the Garmin I like is when you miss a turn it will automatically re-calculate the route, the Tom Tom GPS requires to press some button and go through some prompts to re-calculate.

Now I look from the Dec 2008 Consumer Reports (Best Electronics 2008):

Best for most drivers: portable gps unit reviews
Garmin Nuvi 760 (Nuvi 750, Nuvi 770, Nuvi 780)
Garmin Nuvi 255W
Garmin Nuvi 255

Best on a budget:
Garmin Nuvi 200W (Nuvi 250W)
TomTom One 130
Garmin Nuvi 200 (Nuvi 250, Nuvi 270)

Best for voice recognition:
Garmin Nuvi 880 (Nuvi 850, Nuvi 860)

Best for traffic information:
Dash Express

This is a true: Garmin makes a pretty darn good GPS all around! Garmin and TomTom are world leaders in GPS system, and they both offer a tremendous value and quality for what they have to offer. Garmin is the best in the U.S. and TomTom is better in Europe/UK.

If you live in the U.S. so Garmin better for you! Garmin makes really good navigation systems. They are easily updated and have a lot of new technology built into them. I believe one of their models has live traffic updating as well, so it will give you fastest way based on how traffic is at that exact moment.
Definitely go with a Garmin - they are the industry leader, and the company is run very well (i.e., aggressively and proactively) so they will be a big player for the foreseeable future - which means support and (most importantly) map updates for you and your way for a while.

You can buy it almost anywhere but I suggest buying it online.
I never had a problem buying online, Online shop is a great resource to read user reviews of the product you are buying.

I’ve been buying items for a few years and always felt safe.
