A GPS Navigation Systems

Increases dependence on electronics/technology so that if it ever breaks (like my mom’s did recently) they are helpless. In her case, she called me frantic from the side of the road because she threw away her paper map. Side Note: A paper book never has dead batteries.
Also, people get completely absurdly stupid when they get to large intersections, etc where the GPS doesn’t tell them exactly where to go. Signs work better, and generally easier to read (like Rte 5N, and an arrow pointing to Rte 5N, rather than a line of text saying “turn slight right onto 5N/Joe Somebody Rd”) This means people are blindly jumping lanes and doing all sorts of tomfoolery when they could have just looked at signs and planned their actions.

Best Deal on a Garmin Zumo 550?
I am in the market for a Garmin GPS for the bike - looking at the Zumo 550. I hear it is the dog’s bollocks. I’d like to find the best price - currently see them selling for $580 USD online.
Anyone know of a good place for a deal on a Garmin 450 or 550? Is there a site for refurbished Garmin units?
The lowest I can see at the moment from a reputable store is $654 (shipped, no tax for me) at PCNation. Sales in the past few months have been down to $600 so if you are patient… Costco, Compuplus, PCNation, BuyDig, GPSDiscount.com, Abes of Maine, Froogle, and Amazon are good places to watch.

What is a better brand of gps navigation units…..Garmin or Magellan and why?
I’d also like to know the ease of use and accuracy. Thanks.
Garmin nüvi 760,Excellent gps unit…. my only complaint is the “tinny” sound and the lack of a signal beep as you approach a turn. The features of the 760 are as described and function well… although I’ve only had my unit for the last 2 days. I’m not too sure whether I’ll subscibe to the traffic feature after the 3 month trial subscription expires… but I’ll give it a few weeks of use to see if the subscription is worth it.
I’m using the supplied dashboard mount. It seems to be well secured to the dashboard. I don’t think I’ll need the windshield mount.
I did have to upgrade the software. When I registered the unit on the Garmin webpage, it offered a free upgrade to the 2009 version of the map software. It takes a good hour or two to do the upgrade using the Garmin web updater program that is free to download.
I was quite suprised to find that the brightness of the display is excellent, even in bright sunshine.
All in all this gps is really quite good and very easy to use… I highly recommend it.
