Choosing a Handheld GPS Receiver – What You Need to Know
Millions of people have discovered the usefulness of a handheld GPS receiver. This is particularly true of outdoor enthusiasts whether they are hikers, backpackers, hunters, or geocachers because using the Global Positioning System tells them where they are in the world and how to get to where they want to go. The first thing you need to know when purchasing a handheld GPS unit is what do you need it for. This is important because most GPS systems are designed for specific purposes. For instance a GPS receiver that is intended for use in a vehicle or boat will have features and data that may not work so well in the wilderness.
A handheld receiver is also smaller then a standard vehicle mounted unit and many can easily fit into your pocket. There is also a weight issue for those who are concerned with how much they are packing weighs. As the technology has progressed these small units have become not only more powerful but also have become much lighter then their predecessors.
Add-ons, accessories, and the ability to download software/data is also an important consideration. Again, this will depend on what you need a GPS for but these are things to consider. Firmware updates keep your GPS up-to-date and fix bugs that have been found in the operating software. Map and data downloads can make your unit more functional for your specific needs. Being able to interface with your home PC or laptop allows you to customize trip information and download/upload data.
The last thing to consider is ease of use and functionality. Are the controls/buttons easy to use? Is the display screen easy to see and read? Is there the option to customize displays with information that is important to your purposes? All questions that need to be addressed when choosing a handheld GPS receiver.
