Garmin, one of the world’s leaders in satellite navigation systems for motorists, brings its advanced GPS technology to the fairway with the GolfLogix GPS.

Judging by its features and the manufacturer’s description it looks to be designed with the avid golfer in mind. Targeting simplicity and accuracy shouldn’t be a problem for Garmin which is known for its advanced technology and simple to use products.

By looking at the unit you can see that the interface and controls are designed for clarity and ease of use with a large crisp display showing you yardages to all the objects and targets on the hole. The display is grey scale, with good readability in all lighting conditions and no flashy graphics.

The GolfLogix GPS is definitely not the type of gadget for showing off in the 19th hole after but does give the user what they need to know: which are the distances to hazards, the green and flag stick and other points of note on the course.

The unit is lightweight coming in at just 5.3 ounces and is supplied with a belt or bag clip for ease of carrying. When the weather turns and the rain starts to fall, no need to worry about the GPS as it is 100% weatherproof.

A common beef from owners was that the unit requires 2 AA batteries, there are some supplied when you purchase the unit but you have the inconvenience of buying replacement batteries all the time. Although using rechargeable AA batteries and carrying a spare set in your bag would help the issue. A pair of AA batteries should provide enough to power the GPS for 17 hours. Garmin does require a yearly fee to update course information etc. Relative to other data providers it is not that expensive and for the accuracy of the information provided is well worth it.

Can I use maps other than Garmin in a Garmin GPS?

I am considering getting a Garmin GPS, but it seems they only want you to use their own software, and it’s not cheap. What about other GPS software/maps? Will they work in a Garmin unit?

Get a Garmin. Its the best and the most accurate. Garmin pre- installed maps would be ok for two years without an update. I saw a 2110 update in walmart for $45 compare to $79 Magellan map.
Other GPS maps won’t work in Garmin so as Garmin maps can’t be installed in other brands.I have 2 Garmins and 2 Magellans.

Do I need to buy two software upgrades for two C330 Garmin GPS units, or will one work on both units?

You need to buy two. Garmin Upgrades are licensed per serial number. In North America, at least, you actually have to order two media kits as the license is included in the package.

The sleek design of the Garmin Forerunner 305 gps makes it feel as if your not even wearing it.  I found it amazing that something so small and comfortable could hold an unbelievable amount of data.  The unit is waterproof so you can run anytime during the day, rain or shine.  The widescreen is easy to view while you are running due to its high resolution which eliminates the glare of the sun.  

The antenna is positioned on the device so that while the screen is facing you, the antenna itself is pointing straight to the sky which provides incredible receiver strength.  You can run through thick forests and still get great reception.  This unit always knows where you are at all times because it can quickly calculate your position due to the reception it receives from satellites.  The Garmin Forerunner 305 has easy to use buttons that allow you to access all sorts of data and information while you are in the middle of a workout.

The Garmin Forerunner 305 gps includes a wide range of data that can easily be viewed on the screen of the unit.  The data screens display information about your workout including, distance, calories burned, and even heart rate.  The heart rate strap attaches to your chest and allows the system to display the heart rate information on the screen for you to view.  This device also lets you choose your own desired data screens so that you can look at the data that is most important to you and get rid of the ones you don’t care about or dont understand.  This is how the Garmin Forerunner 305 gps is great for non-experienced and experienced runners.  Some people just like to see how many calories they burned while others like to see their heart rate and other data counts.  This unit also can give you alerts during your workout such as when to go faster or slow down.

Portable GPS with traffic receiver?

I was looking into getting a garmin nuvi gps unit. I have narrowed my choices to the the350/360 or the 660 models. The pros to the 350/360 is their very compact size. The 660 is a little larger (widescreen) and has a traffic receiver for traffic updates on the roads you are traveling on.

I tried it with the traffic updates and did not find it worth the extra $ but where I live (Indianapolis) traffic is not a large issue. If I do run into a slowdown I’ll get off at an exit and let it re-route me as I go around it.
